I think a lot of these things must be the sort of crazy drunken promise blurted out in public, that sort of 5 beers too many "hug some strangers at a bar and then say "I really love you guys!!" before falling off your stool and on your face then passing out.
Something like this - Some random CCP guy on stage at Fanfeat after a day of too many beers ...grabs the mic and jumps up and faces the crowd.. Begins to shout in a slured voice "Hey you crazy Eve types!!! I feel a lot of love in this room and...uh..you know what.. we are going give.. um..you bitter vets something special!!! A capital shuttle... no.. your own servers!! looks back to other CCP employees shouting at him and trying to pull him off the stage... OK, not a servers.... looks back again.. shouts "SHUT UP, I want to do this!!" .. looks back at the crowd...OK I meant .. uhm.. "A station of your own!!" He is then pulled off the stage and Fanfest goes on.
Several days after Fanfest in a planning meeting with the CCP folks on stage when the promise was made.."Run the video again..several painful to watch minutes of the Fanfest session play,. screen shows video of the drunken promise and screen goes dark..... "Dude you just promised a special bitter vet station! How do you see that working?"
After several hours of shouting in the meeting. They all stop and agree.. "OK we all agree.. just never speak of it again and we all think they will forget we said that. If someone asks deflect the question with something like "So what did you think about the session on shuttle balancing?" and then say you will get back to them.
Time goes by, finally decide to add icing to the lie cake with a "you can't believe how much planning and work has gone into this and expect it deployed before Fanfest in a couple of weeks. Then finally "oh yeah we nuked it but because have a new thing and it literally will reek with awesome! Just wait for fanfest when we talk about it in which ever session we think will have the lowest attendance, whatever is first up in the morning after the Pub crawl! Then CCP staff thinks to self: (wait did I just let my inner voice out again?)
So nothing to see here, standard CCP process. Make promises, deploy smoke, configure mirrors, wait a long period of time, distract with a new promise, rinse, repeat.
As person with accounts that collectively have been subscribed without interruption for a total of almost 40 years (when added all together) I hope should you ever really decide to reward the dedication it doesn't come from a panel that has anything to do with Dust 514.
In the end I don't know I ever wanted a special station and the suggestion of one seemed really a waste of resource but anything would have been nice. But come on CCP, please work on you communications with the players. I can't see why you didn't just say early on that "Too much beer is bad, Mkay and we think the station is not a good idea after all, we'll get back to you with some other idea". Don't keep saying you are doubling down on promises of stuff that really isn't coming.
OK a lot of folks would consider this whining but every other game I've played for a long time has given very interesting items the longer I played.
So CCP all is forgiven if at Fanfest you just share a Power Point slide with all the stuff you've suggested you are going to do that if you are being honest with yourselves you never really expect to happen. (Still plenty good about the game even if we don't get a bitter vet station.)
How about a slide something like this:

CCP doing such as make 10 year stations is an ode to the players that make this game. They do it in appreciation... It's not a gift any longer if it's demanded, cried over, or becomes cause for dissent. It then becomes an obligation to ungrateful people. Don't be ungrateful, it's bad form.
It wasn't brought about because bitter vets demanded it. CCP promised and confimed they were doing it several times, even to the point of dangling it in front of us with a claim it was part of the last expansion but didn't make it and the promise of having it before fanfest.
So we were promised a pony even though we never asked for one and then told that they decided instead to take the pony behind the barn and shoot it.
So a couple of things we have to ask. Was ANY of it true. Was it really far along and work being done on it till recently? If it was that close why not just deliver it? Is Eve really so crusty that something as seemingly simple as copying a current asset and putting on the grid is a huge deal? I did read it turned out to be impossible to work out the restricted access based on account age. I sort of believe that, but I run software teams for a living and I would have investigated and figured out basic things like that before I have any real resources applied to delivering it.
Bottom line this is either a real indicator that the development process is a mess at CCP or we aren't being told the real story.
Although I would have probably visited the Jita Bitter station once or twice I'm not losing any sleep over not getting, but I just get tired of seeing yet another faceplant in CCP/player communications. When is the last time we got anything approaching what we've been told to expect or promised to see? |
